The capture of an Israeli soldier by Hamas sends the lives of several characters into a tailspin when Hamas offers to release the soldier in exchange for one thousand Palestinian prisoners.
Dara is a young and dedicated intelligence operative in Unit 8200, Israel's elite military intelligence unit. When she finds out that one of the Palestinian prisoners being released is the man who murdered her father a decade before, Dara does all she can to stop the exchange from taking place.
Tamar, the soldier’s mother, must run a massive and extensive PR campaign to get an entire country and its government behind Hamas’ prisoner exchange program, dealing with impossible pressure from all sides, including by those closest to her.
Asim, the number two in Hamas, is closer to the soldier than he would want anyone else to know. If his secret is exposed he will surely be executed, and on either side of the border.
The story’s characters must navigate a complex web of personal and professional relationships, forcing them to ultimately choose between their loyalty to their loved ones and their duty to their country. In the face of these impossible choices, they must confront the moral ambiguity, love, and loss faced by people every day in one of the world's most confounding conflicts.
The Exchange is a coming-of-age story that shines a light on the human side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, showing the devastating impact it has on those who are caught in the middle. With its honest and unflinching portrayal of the complexities of conflict, The Exchange explores the psychological toll of war and is a powerful reminder of the humanity that lies beneath the surface of even the most difficult situations.
