Headlines offers in-depth, behind-the-scenes access into the Israeli Naval Commandos, equivalent to the US Naval SEALs, one of the world’s most elite units. It is centered around the relationship between sensitive and idealistic Yoav, and his best friend Goldberg, athletically gifted and charismatic. Everything comes easy to Goldberg, while the rigorous training pushes Yoav to the edge physically and mentally. Yoav is not your typical commando. He’s an avid reader and deep thinker, but also a highly-trained operative in a complex geo-political war zone.
When Goldberg is killed next to him during a covert mission, Yoav begins dating Goldberg’s fiancé, Rona, a confident and sharp-witted Intelligence Officer on base. Yoav is forced to face his guilt over his friend’s death and resentment that he might be in Rona’s eyes the consolation prize.
It is a coming-of-age story of Israeli boys who are turned into men within the most extreme circumstances. Yoav tries to find himself within the chaos and madness, as he is confronted with not only his own mortality, but also his capacity for taking the lives of a sometimes ambiguously-defined enemy.
From its two-year training to its covert missions on the frontlines of wars in Gaza and Lebanon, Headlines defies the stereotypes surrounding elite special forces, the Middle East conflict, and growing up in a country constantly at war.
